History

The rich history of Van der Valk...

In 1861, Van der Valk established his first café in Voorschoten, Netherlands. Over 150 years of hospitality experience is represented daily in the 118 Van der Valk hotels, restaurants, event resorts, and other facilities worldwide.

They are all still entirely family-owned and operated, ensuring our guests receive that extra bit of attention! In 1968, Gerrit van der Valk, a descendant of founder Martinus van der Valk, opened the very first motel in the Netherlands: Motel Nuland. This successful concept, inspired by his experiences in America, laid the foundation for the Van der Valk Group as we know it today.

Several developments for the group of Hotels in the Netherlands followed, but the wings were also spread to Germany (1986), Bonaire (1995), Spain (2000), and Belgium (2021). In 2006, two sons of Gerrit and Toos van der Valk, Gert-Jan and Vincent, took over and laid the foundation for the establishment of Van der Valk International to centrally facilitate various support services.

Many hotel openings followed, as well as the development of services in related industries such as event services, ski halls, technical support, and even casino facilities! This makes the Van der Valk “Nuland branch” what it is today: a highly diverse and strong Dutch family business in the hospitality sector, where hospitality and gastronomy remain the main pillars of our operations!
